Midget Tier 1 “A” Cup Final
Sev-Con Orange vs. Progressive Auto Sales Red
This was the ultimate final match up for both teams. The season series was very close. Progressive Red won the previous week to take first place in the playoff round to earn the berth in the House League Provincials in London next week. Sev-Con Orange was looking for redemption in the “Stanley Cup” of House League hockey.
After some early back and forth action at both ends of the ice, some forechecking pressure by Dylan Schroeter caused a turn over at the Sev-Con blueline which Keegan Bressette jumped on for a rush up the ice. Bressette deked through the neutal zone and had a nice quick wrist shot through some defencemen to put Sev-Con up 1-0.
The high pace continued at this point with both teams trading chances. Both goalies, Nick Gardner and Hendrik Lindhout put on a show, with save after save to end the first period with the one goal spread. To start the second Sev-Con too the games’ first penalty but managed to capitalize on a great individual effort by League MVP, Eric Cardinal to jump up 2-0. Cardinal had an incredible season in the Midget Tier 1 tallying over 60 points, including 42 goals which amounted to an almost 20 point lead on the 2nd leading scorer, Luke Ross of Progressive.
At this point Sev-Con goalie Nick Gardner made some key saves as Progressive tried to pull back within one. A few penalty kills later and Sev-Con was capitalizing on their momentum and went up 4-0 with 2 quick goals by Mackenzie Fiddy. Both goals were almost identical with Dallas Henry causing traffic in front of the net, Darius Brooks got the puck to Mackenzie to put Sev-Con in the drivers seat with the 4 goal lead.
Progressive Auto Sales Red did not sit back and pack it in. In the 3rd period that team pushed back. Sev-Con killed off a couple penalties to stem the tide of Red coming at them. Orange was a bit on their heels but played some solid defensive zone coverage and managed to win some key battles to limit Red’s chances. FInally, Clayton Peters broke the shutout for Progressive, assisted on a nice play by Jacob Serratore.
At this point the fore check was on and the battles were a plenty. With the clock ticking the 10:00 minute mark, Progressive kept on the pressure and were rewarded with a second marker to get themselves within 2. The goal was scored by Luke Ross from Matthew Vanderberg and Jordy Grondin.
After an exchange of penalties on both sides, Progressive ran out of time to pull back another goal as Sev-Con was relentless on the penalty kill dumping the puck down the ice over and over. Team Red never backed down and pushed hard right till the final whistle, but Nick Gardner stood the test and shut the door for Team Orange.
Congrats to both teams on a great Midget A Cup Final and a very competitive season.
